Update: Nov 9th 2009

Been awhile but I just wanted to update everyone (if anyone) who reads this.

The Give the Gift of Life Walk went great! We reached out goal!

Also I went to PA USA (that is the farthest west I have ever been yet from my Canadian home) and then celebrated my 2nd year kidney transplant anniversary and then visited Toronto Canada to the hospital where I had my first transplant as a child and saw most of the old staff! I was amazed they remembered me! Then I just celebrated my birthday on Nov 5th. :)

Things are going well. I had been fighting a urinary infection (which have seemed to plague me my entire life so I am pretty used to them but was worried about how that would effect my new kidney and my local Nephrologist said it won't. I have made my appointment with the transplant Nephrologist a week earlier just so that I can get a 2nd opinion) and was tired but my Calcium finally came up so I am happy. My hemoglobin is good so I wonder if my feeling tired is more to do with my Creatinine going up. The local Nephrologist said that was because I was on Septra for my infection but wasn't drinking enough.

I gotta keep on top of that!

Anyway just thought I would update!

Take care all!

82% of the way to meeting our Goal!!

I am so happy about how everyone has been contributing to my goal for the Give the Gift of Life Walk (http://kidney.on.ca/walk)! We are now at 82% ! So close to achieving our goal!

http://my.e2rm.com/graphic.aspx?imageID=Standard&percent=82&language=en-CA

More info on that on the actial page (supplied by the Kidney Foundation of Canada) here: http://my.e2rm.com/personalPage.aspx?registrationID=686270

I also am happy that a few people will be joining me for my walk such as my mom, 2 kidney recipients (one I didn't know got his until my last most recent visit to the transplant hospital and he was there!!) as well as a lady from my
KidneyKorner.com forums all the way from the United States! I am very excited at the interest in trying to raise awareness!

Also, on a side note, since I mentioned the forums, I would like to say that I have made this widget since it is coming up to the end of last year's donations and when they run out I will not be able to afford to keep the site running.

I want to thank everyone for helping me a difference in the Renal Community! It really means a lot!

Sincerely,

Angie of KidneyKorner.com

An estimated 2 million Canadians have kidney disease or are at risk while each day an average of 14 Canadians learn that their kidneys have failed.

    In 2008…
  • There were 4330 people on the waiting list for an organ transplant.
  • 215 people died while waiting for an organ transplant.
  • 303 people withdrew from the waiting list.
(People are withdrawn from the waiting list when they become too sick to receive a transplant, opt out of the surgery, or their health improves.)
  • 2083 trasplants took place.  1541 of those transplants were made possible because of deceased donors.
** All Statistics are from the Canadian Institute for Health Information - who, inturn, gets their information directly from the provincial medical bodies that coordinate transplant.

Since its creation in 1964, The Kidney Foundation has helped millions of Canadians suffering from kidney failure and related disorders such as hypertension, diabetes, urinary tract infections and kidney stones.

Today, the Foundation continues its focus on strategies to improve the organ donor rate in Canada. It is also exploring preventive approaches to detect chronic renal insufficiency at an early stage, delay its progression and prevent complications associated with the disease.

Kidney Transplant doing VERY well and Also NEW SITE!

Kidney Transplant doing VERY well and Also NEW SITE!

Hi everyone! It has been a long while and a long winding road but the kidney is working and I have been off dialysis for over a year now! I was finally able to get off Nov 14th 2007 but then I got so busy with appointments and then had complications that ended me back up in the hospital again in June 2008 and then another hospital in July 2008. Found out I had 3 abdominal abscesses that were made worse but the immunosuppressant transplant medications! So I am all better now but it took me til Nov 2008 to recover. Then all the time since then I had been catching up and then I had site problems Dec 2008 and then Jan 2009 I lost my domain name.

So you can see I have been real busy. I am doing well with the new kidney but was worried as the last 4 months the Creatinine had been going up steadily. The docs think that I was just stressed out over everything and not drinking enough because this last visit to my transplant hospital and my Creatinine went back down again! Yay!!

Also the new site is at kidneykorner.com and the new forums are on the same domain at kidneykorner.com/smfbb/

Please check them out! And Check out the pics: angieskidney.xanga.com/photos/

Update from Sept 30th 2007 to November 8th 2007

New Transplant - But Sleepy - Not working Neph Says ...

I received my kidney transplant Sept 30th 2007 (this is my 2nd one .. been waiting since 2001 for a transplant) but the bad news is it is a "Sleepy Kidney" that STILL has not woken up and the Nephrologist in the transplant hospital has given up on it. He tells my local dialysis unit that the kidney is working 0% even though I have some urine output. This frustrates me as urine output means it is not 0% functionality!! So I feel like I am on my own with this..

I am back on full time dialysis and my dialysis unit likes to pull off fluid even though I tell them not to as I don't want to dehydrate the new kidney. I want to give it the best chance of waking up! People have had kidney transplants wake up after 6 weeks! It has only been 5! It is pretty bad when the docs give up before the patient ..

I have been crying a lot lately. Not because the kidney isn't working .. not because I must go back to the dialysis life .. but because I feel alone in this as my transplant team tells me nothing .. I have no confidence left in them! My Toronto team was MUCH better than the London team but of course the Toronto team .. that was a children's hospital .. so of course they were more attentive! But with the London team little things I notice are not telling me my blood work, not communicating things to me like the risks of biopsies to the new kidney (I have had 4 biopsies in 5 weeks! All 4 have found NO REJECTION yet they keep on doing more! Finally with the last one Dr. Habhab told me about the risks. I let him know no other Neph told me the risks before the 4th one .. he said I should have been told EACH time ..), and they were not aware that I had a parathyroidectomy and my Caclium had dropped too low in the hospital, and the last time I was admitted they neglected to give me one of my meds no matter how many times I asked for it (it was for Thrush .. so I started once again having a hard time swallowing my pills)!

Other patients tell me London is great and just put my faith into the docs and have patience but I have been through this before so I know not to blindly trust them after they have proven to not be on the ball so many times. I am lucky I was watching my own Potassium as I was the one who noticed it was going up too high. I was the one who had to demand for something to bring my hemoglobin up when they were sending me home as it was too low and I live alone. I have felt I had to fight a LOT!!! Not just sit back and trust them! They have proven that I can NOT do that .. So needless to say .. I have become pretty unimpressed with them.

I can accept the kidney not working. That comes with the territory. It is their lack of communication that I find truly upsetting! When I came back to my city for dialysis after biopsy in London, my dialysis unit did not even know to expect me and I almost didn't have dialysis that day. I told them I KNOW I am supposed to be there and my dialysis nurse called London and I finally got a chair an hour and a half after my time. By my nurse calling London I finally got switched back to my local Nephrologist which means I am finally NOT in limbo as I have been for the last week! Now I can talked to my local dialysis team about problems! :) Now maybe I can get my hemoglobin up and be followed locally

** Haven't been able to update my site for a bit now .. still recovering .. but have updated my forum.
